Arsenal FC, founded in 1886 in North London, are one of the top teams in English football. Born as Dial Square, it was only seven years later, in 1893, that they changed their name to Woolwich Arsenal. The club was formed by munitions workers in Woolwich, hence the name.

Arsenal have historically gone against the norm in football. For example, the Gunners were the first team to wear numbers on their shirts (in 1928, against Sheffield Wed), and they refused to install perimeter fencing (even through the years of hooliganism), even though that meant their stadium was ineligible to be an FA Cup semi-final venue.
In 1913, Arsenal played their first game at the historic Highbury Stadium, which would go on to be their home for the following 93 years. In 2006, the club moved to the state-of-the-art Emirates Stadium. Highbury, however, contributed one iconic piece to the Emirates Stadium: the clock that once sat on the famous Clock Stand now sits on the outer side of the Emirates Stadium.
In 1996, French coach Arsène Wenger took over the team and launched a new chapter of the club’s history. More and more foreign players were recruited (they became the first club in the world to start a match with 11 foreign players) and the Gunners adopted a more southern European style of football.

Arsène Wenger also instituted a new system for scouting young talents. This resulted in the discovery of some true stars, among others: Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Freddie Ljungberg, and Patrick Vieira.

With the Frenchman's reign now over after more than 20 years, Arsenal will battle for the title this year under Unai Emery's lead, so be sure to watch one of their matches at the renowned Emirates Stadium.
